Capable Managers: The Scarcest Resource of All
Dr. Linda Duxbury

Dr. Linda Duxbury is one of Canada’s leading workplace health researchers. She has written hundreds of papers, journals, and books, and is the co-author of a series of influential Health Canada reports about work-life balance in Canada. Duxbury uses data from her national study of 33,000 employee with Dr. Chris Higgins that discusses the role of the manager within the organization. Starting with outlining the behaviours associated with good and poor management, Dr. Duxbury then looks at the difference that having a supportive team makes to key employee and organizational outcomes. Finally she focuses on why many managers are having difficulty with the ‘people part of the job,’ and outlines a number of solutions. Organizations who wish to increase the number of supportive managers in their organization will get a lot of concrete advice on how this can be accomplished. In addition, employees with direct reports can gain an increased understanding of what it is that employees want from their managers.

Laurence Gonzales

Laurence Gonzales has been studying accidents and their roots in human behavior for more than 35 years. He has published a dozen books, including two award–winning collections of essays and three novels. His latest work Deep Survival explores personal stories of survival and current research on how the brain works and processes information.

His compelling presentation will cover the concepts of ‘mental models’ — an internal symbol or representation of external reality, ‘behavioural scripts’ — expected behaviors for a given situation and ‘groupness’ — the powerful tendency for humans to form in-groups and their effects on decision making. Gonzales uses real-life examples from mountain climbing to space travel to get his message across to his audience making for an informative and thrilling presentation.

Why Doesn’t Everybody Just Do What I Say?
Communication in Team Building

Dr. Robert Buckman

An internationally renowned expert on inter-personal communication, Dr. Buckman’s skills have been honed in some of the most challenging settings imaginable. A medical oncologist, his techniques are taught at hospitals and medical schools around the world. Communicating difficult messages has always been one of Dr. Buckman’s critical skills, and laughter some of his best medicine.

In his humorous and inspiring presentation he advocates the main advantage of a team is that it consists of people with different abilities and skill-sets. The main disadvantage is that it consists of people with different abilities and skill-sets — people who might not share the same vision of the project. Dr. Buckman shows you the element that is most frequently ignored in team-building: the emotional one. This does not mean you have to agree with the other person’s viewpoint, but you do have to identify and acknowledge their feelings. Dr. Buckman shows us that the communication techniques for doing this are relatively simple and easy to learn. And in this talk, he guides us through them.
